10DLC Registration Explained (And How We Make it Easy)
Since 2020, cell phone carriers have significantly tightened regulations on text messaging to combat the rise of unsolicited messages. For political campaigns, this could mean navigating a complex landscape to ensure compliance and successful delivery of messages. At Good Fight Political, we’ve been at the forefront of these changes, helping our clients understand and adapt to new requirements and fully managing the registration for them.
Understanding the Regulations
Cell phone carriers now monitor and often stop unsolicited text messages to protect consumers. This affects private companies and political campaigns alike. To continue sending messages, campaigns must register with specific regulatory bodies to demonstrate their legitimacy and intent to comply with industry standards.
Key Regulatory Bodies
- Campaign Verify. Campaign Verify is a non-profit service that confirms the identity of U.S. political campaigns, PACs, and other organizations engaging in political messaging. Registration with Campaign Verify is crucial for your campaign to be recognized as legitimate by carriers.
- The Campaign Registry (TCR). The Campaign Registry (TCR) is a crucial element in the messaging ecosystem. It works with mobile carriers to ensure that messaging traffic is verified and compliant. By registering with TCR, campaigns can demonstrate their commitment to following best practices and legal requirements.
The Registration Process
Don't be overwhelmed by this long checklist! Good Fight Political manages every step of the process. All we need you to do is add your information to this form, and ensure your campaign has a privacy policy and cell phone capture field on the website.
- Verify your political campaign with Campaign Verify. Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary information. This includes your campaign’s EIN (Employer Identification Number) and FEC or state or local committee filing. This filing must be published online by the FEC, or state or local election administrator. The contact details present on the filing -- either an address, phone number, or email address -- will be used by Campaign Verify to authenticate the campaign.
- Register with The Campaign Registry. Good Fight Political will take all of the details you shared with us and get you registered on Campaign Registry. This is a two-step process of registering your brand, which verifies your organization's name tax ID number, and then registering your campaign which includes details about how users are opted-in and what sorts of messages you'll be sending to them.
- Vetting. Once your brand and campaign have been created on The Campaign Registry, it's a 5-7 business day process to complete vetting. This ensures your campaign has the highest level of verification from
- Stay Compliant. Once registered, ensure that your messaging adheres to all guidelines. This includes respecting opt-in/opt-out preferences, maintaining message content that complies with legal standards, and regularly monitoring your messaging practices.
Benefits of Compliance
By registering with Campaign Verify and TCR, your campaign can:
- Improve Message Deliverability: Registered campaigns are less likely to have their messages blocked by carriers.
- Build Trust: Voters are more likely to engage with messages from verified and legitimate sources.
- Avoid Penalties: Non-compliance can result in hefty fines and damage to your campaign’s reputation.
